Start with your heaviest regular load

Capacity is the rated weight a forklift can lift at a specified load center (usually 24 inches). Size to your heaviest routine load, not your average, and leave headroom — running a truck near its rated ceiling accelerates wear and shortens mast and hydraulic life. A good rule is to pick a capacity roughly 20% above your heaviest common load. Lift height is how high the forks rise, and it's set by the mast. Measure to your top beam level, then add clearance for the load itself. A forklift's rated capacity assumes a standard 24-inch load center — the distance from the face of the forks to the load's center of gravity. If your load is longer or its weight sits farther out, effective capacity drops, sometimes sharply: a truck rated 5,000 lb at a 24-inch load center may safely handle noticeably less at a 36-inch center. Size with your actual load center in mind, not just the headline number.

Read the data plate before you buy

Every forklift carries a data (capacity) plate listing rated capacity, load center, mast type, maximum lift height, and truck weight. It's the single most important safety reference — the rated capacity there is what the truck lifts at the stated load center and height. When comparing models, match the data-plate capacity to your heaviest load at your real load center and top beam height.
