Walk-In Tub Buying Guide: Door Style, Seat Height, Jets and Sizing

A walk-in tub is the one bathroom purchase where the small numbers on the spec sheet, threshold height, door width, seat dimensions and drain time, decide whether the tub gets used every day or becomes an expensive shelf. As an authorized Empava dealer, we at Urban Supply carry two 54-inch alcove walk-in tubs, one soaking and one whirlpool with an inline heater, plus a 53-inch freestanding walk-in whirlpool, and this walk-in tub buying guide uses their listings to explain what to look for.

Who a Walk-In Tub Helps, and What It Does Not Promise

A standard alcove tub asks you to step over a rim well over a foot off the floor, lower yourself to the bottom and push back up. A walk-in tub replaces that with a door in the side, a threshold of a few inches and a molded seat, so bathing happens seated. Empava's 54-inch walk-in models list a 3-inch threshold, an anti-slip bottom and two handrails set at ergonomic angles to support you on the way out.

Who benefits: people with limited mobility, balance concerns or stiff joints who can still walk into the bathroom, and anyone who wants to keep bathing independently as they age. What it does not do: a walk-in tub is not a medical device and does not replace advice from a doctor or occupational therapist. If the user cannot stand and turn through a roughly 19-inch door opening or needs help transferring from a wheelchair, talk to a therapist or contractor first; a roll-in shower may serve better.

Walk-In Tub Door Style: Swing Direction, Door Width and the Handle

Inward-swinging doors open into the tub. Water pressure pushes the door against its seal, so the design resists leaks and takes no floor space outside the tub; the trade-off is that you close it in a tight space and cannot open it while the tub is full. Outward-swinging doors open into the bathroom, leaving a clear opening that is easier for wheelchair transfers and caregivers, but they need clearance in front of the tub and rely on the latch and seal to hold back the water. Empava's listings do not state the swing direction, so if it matters for your layout, ask us before you order.

Door width is the number to check against the person who will use the tub: Empava lists 19.68 inches on its 54-inch soaking walk-in and 19.25 inches on the 54-inch whirlpool model. The handle matters more than most buyers expect: Empava designed it on both 54-inch models to turn easily for weak wrists, with arthritis in mind, and the soaking model's listing describes an additional latch so a child cannot unlock the door while the tub is full.

Threshold Height, Seat Size and Soaking Depth

Threshold: the height you step over with the door open. Both Empava 54-inch walk-in tubs list a 3-inch threshold. Seat: the seat is molded into the shell, so it cannot be changed later. Empava lists one seat on its 54-inch models, a sitting area 17.72 inches deep and 21.63 inches long, a reclining curve widened to 26.38 inches at the chest and enlarged corner curves, which is why it describes the tubs as fit for larger stature and rates them for up to 440 pounds. Seat height is not stated on the listings; if you need it for a transfer, contact us and we will check with Empava.

Soaking depth: Empava lists 32.28 inches top to bottom inside an overall height of 39.76 inches. That depth is the reason to choose a walk-in tub over a standard tub with a bath seat: you sit upright and still get what Empava calls deep soaking relaxation for big frames.

Filling and Draining a Walk-In Tub: Plan for the Wait

This is the part of ownership that surprises first-time buyers. Because the door seals the side of the tub, you get in, close the door and then fill, and you wait for the tub to drain before opening it again. Fill time depends on your faucet and water pressure; drain time depends on the tub. Empava lists a 1.97-inch drain on both 54-inch models and rates the whirlpool model's fast-drain design at about 3 minutes to empty completely. Water capacity matters too: the 54-inch models hold 84.5 gallons, considerably more than a typical 60-inch alcove tub, so check your water heater's capacity, and pair the tub with a fast-fill filler and a handheld shower.

Staying warm while you wait is where the inline heater earns its place. The 54-inch whirlpool walk-in has a constant heating function that holds the water between 77°F and 104°F, paired with the 3-minute drain so the bather is not left sitting in cooling water. The soaking model has no heater, so a warm bathroom and a fast faucet do that work. On both models a grooved bench directs leftover water toward the drain so the seat dries between uses.

Walk In Tub With Jets vs Walk In Soaking Tub

The walk in soaking tub is the simpler purchase: no pump, no heater, nothing to wire, and a lighter unit at 176.37 pounds dry. Empava's 54-inch alcove soaking walk-in shares the whirlpool version's shell, threshold, handrails, handle and capacity, and its listing shows a 3-year warranty.

The walk in tub with jets adds hydrotherapy. Empava's 54-inch inline heater whirlpool walk-in runs 13 water jets and 12 air jets, 25 in total, and weighs 220.46 pounds dry. Empava positions the adjustable water jets for a firmer massage aimed at the back, legs and feet, and the gentler air jets for elderly or disabled users. Many people find a warm jetted bath helps them relax and ease everyday muscle stiffness, but how much it helps is individual, and it is not a substitute for treatment.

Which to choose: if the tub is primarily about safety and independence, the soaking model does the job with less to install; if sore muscles or stiff joints are part of the reason you are buying, the whirlpool model's jets and heater are worth the extra weight and wiring. Our Empava bathtub buying guide covers water jets vs air jets in more depth, and the Empava whirlpool tub collection shows Empava's jetted tubs without a door.

53 Inch Walk In Tub vs 54 Inch: Sizing an Alcove Walk In Tub

Walk-in tubs are shorter than standard tubs because you sit. Empava's alcove walk-ins measure 54.33 inches long, 30.31 inches wide and 39.76 inches tall, and the freestanding walk-in whirlpool is a 53 inch walk in tub with a left-side drain. That length is the key installation fact: the most common alcove in American homes is framed for a 60-inch tub, so a 54-inch walk-in typically leaves about 6 inches to make up, which installers usually fill with an extension panel or a tiled ledge at the faucet end.

Width and height: at 30.31 inches wide, the Empava walk-ins match the 30-inch width of a typical alcove tub, so existing framing usually works. The 39.76-inch height is far taller than a standard tub, which changes where the shower valve sits and how a curtain closes above it. Drain side: both 54-inch alcove walk-ins are right-drain models and the 53-inch freestanding walk-in is left-drain. If your existing drain is at the other end, the plumbing has to move, which is often the most expensive surprise in an alcove walk in tub installation. The Empava alcove tub collection lists the drain side for every alcove model.

Walk-In Tub Installation: Alcove Framing, Plumbing and Power

Alcove installation means the tub sits in a three-wall enclosure with the door facing the open side; both 54-inch Empava walk-ins are listed as alcove tubs. Plan for a well-supported floor, because the whirlpool model weighs 220.46 pounds empty and 84.5 gallons of water adds roughly 700 pounds before the bather sits down; an access panel for the pump and heater; and the drain rough-in on the correct side. Measure the delivery path too; the tub has to fit through doors in one piece.

Electrical and plumbing: the soaking model needs no power. The whirlpool model has a pump and an inline heater and needs a dedicated, GFCI-protected connection made by a licensed electrician; confirm the exact circuit requirement with us before you order. Use a licensed plumber for the installation itself.

Our Recommendation

Safety first, simplest installation: the 54-inch alcove soaking walk-in. Same threshold, handrails and seat as the whirlpool, nothing to wire, and lighter to carry in.

Muscle relief and long soaks: the 54-inch alcove inline heater whirlpool walk-in. The constant heating and 3-minute drain answer the two biggest complaints about walk-ins, and the 25 jets are the reason to pick it over the soaker.

Existing right-side drain in a 60-inch alcove: either 54-inch model, with an extension panel planned for the leftover 6 inches. Left-side drain or no alcove: the 53-inch freestanding walk-in whirlpool when in stock, or a plumbing change to suit a 54-inch alcove model.

Household members who do not need a door: consider a standard tub instead; our bathtub buying guide compares Empava's whirlpool, air massage, combination and soaking tubs.
