A range hood does more than remove cooking smoke — it protects your kitchen cabinets from grease buildup, reduces indoor air pollutants, and keeps your home from smelling like last night's dinner. The problem is most people either skip installing one entirely or buy the wrong size. This guide breaks down exactly how to choose the right range hood based on your cooktop type, kitchen layout, and cooking habits.
Wall mount range hoods are the most popular choice for kitchens where the cooktop sits against a wall. They mount directly to the wall above your range and include a decorative chimney that vents through the ceiling or exterior wall. Wall mounts deliver strong airflow because the wall helps funnel smoke and steam directly into the hood. Browse our full wall mount range hood collection to compare styles and sizes.
Under-cabinet range hoods install beneath an existing wall cabinet directly above your cooktop. They are the most space-efficient option and work well in kitchens with limited ceiling height or where you want to preserve upper cabinet storage. Check out our under-cabinet range hoods for compact options that still deliver serious airflow.
Island range hoods hang from the ceiling and are designed for cooktops built into a kitchen island. Because there are no walls to help capture smoke, island hoods require higher CFM ratings — typically 100 to 200 CFM more than a wall-mounted equivalent. See our island range hood selection for ceiling-mounted options.
Insert range hoods are built into custom cabinetry or a custom hood cover, giving you full control over the look while still getting professional-grade ventilation. These are ideal for high-end kitchen remodels. Our insert range hood collection includes models from 400 to 1200 CFM.
Ductless range hoods recirculate air through charcoal filters instead of venting outside. They are the easiest to install — no ductwork required — but they are less effective at removing heat and moisture. Best suited for apartments, condos, or kitchens where exterior venting is not possible. Browse our ductless range hoods if your kitchen lacks duct access.
CFM stands for cubic feet per minute and measures how much air the hood moves. Undersizing your range hood means grease and smoke linger. Oversizing wastes energy and may require a make-up air system (required by code in many jurisdictions above 400 CFM). Here is how to size it correctly.
For gas ranges: Calculate 1 CFM for every 100 BTUs of total burner output. A standard 4-burner gas range with 40,000 total BTUs needs a minimum of 400 CFM. A professional 6-burner range pushing 60,000+ BTUs needs 600 CFM or higher.
For electric or induction cooktops: Use 100 CFM per linear foot of cooktop width. A 30-inch cooktop needs approximately 250 CFM. A 36-inch cooktop needs 300 CFM.
Kitchen volume method: Your range hood should be capable of refreshing the air in your kitchen roughly 15 times per hour. Multiply your kitchen dimensions (length x width x height in feet) to get cubic footage, multiply by 15, then divide by 60 to get the minimum CFM. Example: a 12 x 15 x 9-foot kitchen = 1,620 cubic feet x 15 / 60 = 405 CFM minimum.
Island installations: Add 100 to 200 CFM beyond the standard calculation since there is no wall to help channel airflow into the hood.
| Cooktop Type | Recommended CFM | Sizing Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Electric / Induction (30") | 250-300 CFM | 100 CFM per linear foot |
| Electric / Induction (36") | 300-360 CFM | 100 CFM per linear foot |
| Gas Range (40,000 BTU) | 400 CFM | 1 CFM per 100 BTU |
| Gas Range (60,000 BTU) | 600 CFM | 1 CFM per 100 BTU |
| Professional Gas (80,000+ BTU) | 800-1200 CFM | 1 CFM per 100 BTU |
| Island Installation | Add 100-200 CFM | Above standard calc |
Width: Your range hood should be at least as wide as your cooktop — ideally 3 to 6 inches wider on each side for better smoke capture. If your range is 30 inches, go with a 36-inch hood. If your range is 36 inches, a 42-inch hood provides optimal coverage.
Mounting height: Install the hood 24 to 30 inches above an electric cooktop, or 28 to 36 inches above a gas cooktop. Mounting too high reduces capture efficiency. Mounting too low creates a fire hazard and blocks your workspace.
Duct size: Match your duct diameter to the hood's outlet. Most residential hoods use 6-inch or 8-inch round ducts. Never reduce the duct size below the hood's rated outlet — this restricts airflow and increases noise.
Range hood noise is measured in sones. For reference, 1 sone is roughly the sound of a quiet refrigerator. Most range hoods operate between 3 and 8 sones at full speed. If noise matters to you, look for multi-speed models that run at 1 to 2 sones on the lowest setting for everyday cooking, with higher speeds reserved for heavy searing or frying.
Higher CFM hoods are inherently louder. A 400 CFM hood at full speed typically hits 4 to 6 sones. An 800+ CFM professional hood can reach 7 to 9 sones. Multi-speed controls let you run at lower CFM (and lower noise) for routine cooking and crank it up only when needed.
Multi-speed fan controls: Minimum 3 speeds. This gives you flexibility — low for simmering, high for stir-frying or searing. Some premium models offer 4 to 6 speeds or variable speed controls.
LED lighting: LED lights are now standard on quality range hoods. They use less energy, produce less heat, and last significantly longer than halogen bulbs. Look for hoods with adjustable brightness.
Baffle filters vs. mesh filters: Stainless steel baffle filters are easier to clean, more durable, and more effective at trapping grease than aluminum mesh filters. Baffle filters are standard on professional-grade hoods and are dishwasher safe.
Delayed auto shut-off: This feature keeps the fan running for 1 to 15 minutes after you turn it off, clearing residual smoke and odors. Convenient and prevents moisture buildup.
