Amish Bedroom Furniture: How to Choose Wood Species & Finishes
Amish bedroom furniture is usually chosen piece by piece — a bed, then a dresser, nightstands and a chest — so the wood and finish you pick first sets the look for the whole room. This guide covers the wood species and finish families Barkman Furniture uses on its Amish-made bedroom collections, and how to order a set that matches.
Wood Species for Amish Bedroom Furniture
Barkman's finish charts show its finishes on these species: Brown Maple, Wormy Maple, Tiger Maple, Grey Elm, Rustic Walnut, Rustic White Oak, White Oak and Red Oak. Barkman sources its hardwood exclusively from sustainable Midwest forests and dries it before building.
Some of the bedroom listings on our store name the wood in the title — for example the Chesapeaka pieces in Tiger Maple / Brown Maple and the Berkeley pieces in Elm / Brown Maple. Where a listing does not show wood and finish options, contact us before ordering and we will confirm what Barkman offers for that piece.
Amish Furniture Finishes: OCS, Barkman and Bi-Co
OCS finishes. OCS stands for Ohio Certified Stains, formed by a group of Holmes County small business owners to manage stain colors. Its purpose is guaranteed stain matches among different craftsmen — useful when a bedroom set is built across several pieces.
Barkman finishes. These are finish colors Barkman selected for their popularity and for how well each one complements the wood it is applied to.
Bi-Co finishes. Specialty stains and finish techniques developed by finish shops from two Ohio counties, mainly crackled, antiqued, layered and glazed effects.
Barkman top-coats its finishes with a post-catalyzed conversion varnish. Barkman notes that on-screen colors can differ from the real finish and that physical samples give the most accurate representation — ask us if you need help comparing finishes.
| Finish family | What it is | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| OCS | Ohio Certified Stains with guaranteed matches between craftsmen | Matching several pieces in one color |
| Barkman | Popular colors chosen to complement each wood | A proven color on your chosen species |
| Bi-Co | Crackled, antiqued, layered and glazed specialty effects | A distressed or aged look |
Building a Matching Amish Bedroom Set
Pick the collection first. Barkman's bedroom collections such as Chesapeaka, Berkeley and Waterford include beds, dressers, chests, nightstands, mirrors and storage pieces. Examples: the Chesapeaka Double Panel Bed (King, Queen or Full), the Chesapeaka 6-Drawer Dresser and the Berkeley 9-Drawer Dresser.
Order the set together. Ordering every piece in the same wood and finish at the same time is the simplest way to get a consistent look, and it keeps the whole set on one timeline.
Allow for lead time. Barkman bedroom pieces are made to order and ship in approximately 9 weeks — our Amish furniture lead times guide explains why. Beds do not include a mattress.
