The tradeoff against gas

A solar generator wins on silence, indoor safety, and zero running cost. A gas inverter generator wins on sustained output — it will run as long as you keep feeding it fuel, where a battery is finite until the sun comes back. For a 24-hour outage, solar is the better experience. For a five-day ice storm in December, when panel output collapses, fuel wins. Households that take backup seriously usually end up owning both.

Reading the two numbers that matter

Watt-hours (Wh) is the tank — how much total energy is stored. Watts (W) is the spigot — how much can come out at once. A 2,000Wh unit rated at 1,800W output can run an 1,800W load for about an hour, or a 100W load for close to twenty. Buyers routinely oversize capacity and undersize output, then discover the unit will not start a well pump.

Recharge planning

Solar input is rated at ideal conditions. In real conditions — panel angle, haze, winter sun — plan on 60–75% of the rated figure. If you need a full recharge in one day, buy more panel than the spec sheet suggests.
