See Through Fireplaces

A see-through fireplace — also called a double-sided or peninsula fireplace — is open on both faces, so a single firebox serves two rooms at once. It is the usual specification between a living room and a dining room, between a bedroom and a bathroom, or between an interior room and a covered patio.

Napoleon and Empire account for the largest share of the fireboxes, with Kingsman and Majestic covering the mid-range.

Three things to settle before choosing:

• Firebox or component. Most items here are complete see-through fireboxes. The collection also carries see-through gas log sets from Grand Canyon and conversion kits from Napoleon, which are parts for an existing opening rather than a fireplace on their own — check the product title before ordering.
• Venting. The range spans direct-vent, vent-free and vented models. Venting decides where the unit can physically go and what the install costs, so settle it before you settle on a look.
• Both sides are finished sides. A see-through unit is viewed from two rooms, so glass, media, trim and surround all get specified twice. Budget accordingly, and think about what the fire looks like from each room.
