Why bases ship separately from tops

Dining tables are specified as two decisions: the top (species, finish, dimensions, edge profile) and the base (style, material, height, footprint). Buying them separately is how you get an exact-size top on a base that suits the room, and it is also why bases carry their own lead times. QuickShip inventory removes the base from the critical path.

Choosing a base style

• Trestle and Z-style — two end supports. Maximum legroom along the sides, seats the most people, but the end seats sit against the support.
• X-style — crossed supports. Visually lighter than a trestle with similar stability; the crossbar can interfere with chair placement at the ends.
• Pedestal and Wishbone — a single or splayed central column. Completely open perimeter, best for round tops and for squeezing an extra chair in; requires a heavier footing for stability on larger tops.

Sizing

Standard dining height is 30 inches finished, so a 28–29 inch base plus a 1–2 inch top lands correctly. Keep the base footprint at least 12 inches inside the top on every side so chairs can tuck without hitting the support, and confirm the base pair is rated for your top's weight — a solid hardwood or stone top loads a base very differently than a veneer.
