Order Pickers

An order picker raises the operator with the load so items can be picked by hand directly from racking at height — a completely different job from a forklift, which moves whole pallets. Anywhere picking happens case by case or piece by piece above floor level, an order picker is the correct machine.

Lift height is the first spec

Order pickers are sold by platform lift height, and that is what determines which racking levels you can actually service. Measure to the top of the highest beam you need to pick from, not to the top of the rack. A 118-inch unit will not reliably service a level whose beam sits at 120 inches.

Safety requirements are not optional

Elevating-platform trucks carry the operator, which puts them in a stricter category than a walkie stacker. OSHA requires operator training specific to the truck type, and a full-body harness with a lanyard anchored to the platform is standard practice on any unit that elevates the operator. Budget for guardrails, harnesses, and training in the project cost, not after.

Where an order picker beats the alternatives

Compared to a scissor lift, it drives loaded and integrates with your racking layout. Compared to a ladder, it is faster, carries the picked goods with the operator, and is the only defensible option in an audited facility. Compared to a forklift, it is the only way to pick partial pallets without bringing the whole pallet down.
