Inverter generators produce clean, regulated power — typically under 3% total harmonic distortion — which is what makes them safe for laptops, CPAP machines, modern refrigerator control boards, and RV electronics that a conventional open-frame generator can damage over time. They are also dramatically quieter, because the engine throttles to match load instead of running flat out at 3,600 RPM.

Sizing: add your surge watts, not your running watts

Anything with a motor — a fridge, a well pump, an air conditioner, a circular saw — draws two to three times its running wattage for the first second or two of startup. Size to the largest single surge load plus everything else running at the same time. A common RV-and-camping build lands at 2,200–3,500W; running a home fridge, a sump pump, and lights through an outage usually wants 4,000–5,500W.

Features worth paying for

• Dual fuel — gasoline plus propane. Propane stores indefinitely without stabilizer and runs cleaner; gasoline gives you roughly 10% more output. Having both is real resilience during a multi-day outage.
• CO shutoff (Champion CO Shield, PowerSmart CO Alert) — automatically kills the engine on rising carbon monoxide. Not optional if the unit will ever run near a house, garage, or RV.
• Parallel capability (Champion ParaLINK) — link two smaller units for more output. Two 2,500W units are easier to carry and more flexible than one 5,000W unit, and you can run just one for light loads.
• Electric start — worth it on anything over about 3,500W, and worth it for anyone who will be starting the unit in cold weather.
