An inverter generator is the right call whenever the power you make has to be clean, quiet, and efficient — running a laptop and a router during an outage, powering an RV, or keeping a campsite civilized without drowning out conversation. It costs more per watt than a conventional generator, and for good reasons this guide will make concrete. Here is how to choose the right inverter generator by power quality, wattage, fuel, and expandability.

A conventional generator runs its engine at a fixed speed and sends that raw AC straight to the outlet. An inverter generator produces AC, converts it to DC, then inverts it back to a clean, tightly regulated AC sine wave through electronics. That extra step is the entire value proposition, and it shows up in four ways.
Clean power (low THD). Total Harmonic Distortion measures how far the power deviates from a perfect sine wave. Inverter generators typically produce 3–5% THD — often lower — while conventional generators generally run around 9–10% or higher. A THD of roughly 5% or less is the level commonly cited as safe for sensitive electronics. That is why you can run laptops, phones, TVs, and modern appliance control boards on an inverter generator with confidence, while conventional generators can degrade or damage them. (Never rely on any portable generator as the sole power source for life-sustaining medical equipment — those needs call for a dedicated, professionally specified backup system.)
Quiet operation. Because the engine throttles up and down with demand instead of running flat out, inverter generators are dramatically quieter — the difference between conversation-level hum and a roar. This is what makes them RV-park and campground friendly.
Fuel efficiency. That same load-following throttle means the engine only burns what the moment requires. Under light loads, an inverter generator sips fuel and runs far longer on a tank than a fixed-speed unit.
Portability. Inverter generators pack more power into a lighter, more compact body. Smaller units are genuinely carry-with-one-hand portable; larger open-frame inverter models add wheels while staying lighter than comparable conventional generators.
Every generator has two numbers, and confusing them is the most common buying mistake. Running (rated) watts is the continuous power it supplies. Starting (surge) watts is the brief extra it can deliver to start motors — refrigerators, air conditioners, pumps, and power tools all pull a large spike the instant they switch on.
To size correctly, add up the running watts of everything you will run at once, then make sure the generator's running-watt rating covers that total, with headroom for the single largest motor's starting surge. A practical map for our lineup:

When you are between sizes, round up: a generator loafing at half load runs quieter, longer, and cooler than one pinned at its limit.
Gasoline is simplest and most available, with the highest power output per unit, but gas is hard to store long-term and can be exactly what is scarce during a widespread outage.
Dual-fuel units run on gasoline or propane. Propane stores indefinitely, burns cleaner, and is easy to keep on hand in tanks — so dual-fuel gives you flexibility and a fuel that is ready after months in the garage. A few features meaningfully change how usable an inverter generator is. A fuel gauge, a low-oil shutoff, and wheels-and-handle kits on larger units round out the features that make ownership easier.
An inverter generator's headline runtime is measured at a fraction of its capacity — often 25% load — so real-world runtime depends heavily on what you're actually powering. Because the engine follows the load, running fewer devices genuinely stretches the tank: the same generator that runs eight hours powering your essentials might run far longer overnight when only the refrigerator cycles on and off. This is the core efficiency advantage over a conventional generator, which burns fuel at a fixed rate no matter how little you're drawing.
For extended outages, fuel flexibility is what keeps the lights on. Propane's indefinite shelf life means a dual-fuel unit is ready after months in storage, while gasoline degrades and may be unavailable when everyone needs it at once. A tri-fuel unit tapped into a home natural-gas line effectively removes the runtime ceiling entirely. Match the fuel strategy to your risk: occasional camping favors simple gasoline; serious home-backup planning favors dual- or tri-fuel.
Inverter generators are low-maintenance but not no-maintenance. Change the oil per the manual (the first change comes early, after the initial break-in hours), keep the air filter clean, and run the unit periodically so it's ready when you need it. For gasoline storage, either use a fuel stabilizer or run the carburetor dry before long-term storage to prevent gummed fuel — the most common reason a stored generator won't start. Store it somewhere dry and always run it outdoors, well away from windows and doors, never in a garage or enclosed space. A unit that's maintained and exercised a few times a year is far more likely to start reliably for many years.
