How to Choose a Fireplace
Start with fuel. Electric fireplaces plug in or hard-wire, need no venting and can go almost anywhere, which makes them the easiest choice for apartments, condos and media walls. Gas fireplaces give real flame and real heat and are vented direct-vent or vent-free depending on the model and your local code. Wood-burning fireplaces and stoves give the most heat and the classic experience, and need a proper chimney or chimney system.
Then pick the installation. Built-in fireboxes and linear units sit inside a wall or framed chase; wall-mount units hang like a TV; fireplace inserts convert an existing masonry opening; freestanding stoves stand on a hearth pad. Multi-sided and see-through units open the fire to two or three rooms.
Size it to the room and the wall. Measure the width you have, check the unit's rough-opening and clearance specs on its product page, and for gas or wood check the BTU rating against the space you want to heat.
