Start with running watts. The smallest inverters here are rated near 1,850 running watts — a fridge, some lights, and device charging. The 3,500W to 5,500W middle is where most home-backup buyers land, adding a sump or well pump and a window AC. At the top, an 11,000-watt Champion inverter is sized for feeding a transfer switch. Manufacturers usually rate propane output slightly below gasoline output on the same engine, so if propane is your primary fuel, size off the propane number on the spec sheet.
Then pick a frame type:
- Enclosed inverter — quietest, cleanest power for electronics. Several Champion models here include ParaLINK ports so two units can be run in parallel.
- Open frame inverter — more watts per dollar with inverter-grade power, but louder and bulkier.
- Conventional portable — cheapest per watt, best for tools and job sites.
Starting method is the last real decision: recoil pull, electric start, remote key fob, or wireless start. If the generator lives in a shed and you want it running without going outside in the weather, pay for remote or wireless start. Several Champion units in this collection list CO Shield automatic shutoff and the PowerSmart model lists a CO alert — worth confirming on the model page, because carbon monoxide is the real hazard with any portable generator.
