Direct Vent Gas Fireplace

A direct vent gas fireplace is a sealed-combustion fireplace: it draws outside air in and sends exhaust out through a single co-axial vent that runs horizontally through an exterior wall or vertically through the roof. It needs no chimney and does not use room air for combustion, which is why direct vent is the standard choice for new construction, renovations and tightly built homes.

Direct Vent Gas Fireplaces from Napoleon, Superior, Kingsman, Majestic and Empire

Sizes run from a compact 22" traditional unit to 84" linear fireplaces, in single-sided, see-through and peninsula (multi-view) configurations. Many models are listed separately for natural gas and propane, and with electronic or millivolt ignition, so check the fuel and ignition in the product title before you order.

Four things to settle before choosing:

  • Fuel. Natural gas and propane versions are separate listings. Order the one that matches your gas supply.
  • Vent route. Top-vent and rear-vent models exit differently, and maximum vent lengths are set by each manufacturer. Know whether the vent will go out the wall behind the unit or up through the roof before you pick a model.
  • Ignition. Electronic ignition lights the pilot only when the fireplace is called for. Millivolt (standing pilot) ignition keeps working during a power outage.
  • Style and sides. Choose from traditional, clean-face and linear designs, plus see-through and peninsula units that are open on more than one side. Multi-sided units need more framing and finishing, so plan the wall first.
