If you are shopping Champion in California, the choice is not "which generator" — it is "which of the few." Most Champion generators are 49-state units that cannot legally be sold or shipped into California; only five carry CARB certification. That narrows a catalogue of dozens to a short list, and the decision inside it comes down to two questions.

This guide compares the core CARB-certified models against each other. No other brands, no cross-shopping — just what actually separates the Champion units you are allowed to buy. Two pairs and an outlier, and why they group that way

Four of the five run the same 224cc Champion engine. That is the first thing worth knowing, because it means the differences between those four are not engine differences — they split by frame type and by fuel. The fifth sits outside that engine class entirely.

  • The 3800-watt pair — a conventional open-frame portable, offered in gasoline-only and dual-fuel versions.
  • The 5500-watt pair — an open-frame inverter, again offered in gasoline-only and dual-fuel versions.
  • The 10,000-watt tri-fuel outlier — a 459cc EFI machine running on gasoline, propane or natural gas, and the only CARB-certified Champion portable above the 5500-watt class.

So the decisions are the same two either way: how much power you need, and how many fuels you want to be able to feed it.

Decision one: conventional or inverter

The 3800-watt units are conventional generators. The alternator produces power directly, the engine runs at a fixed speed regardless of load, and the output is fine for tools, pumps, heaters and lighting. They are the cheaper way to buy watts.

The 5500-watt units are inverter generators in an open frame. The engine speed varies with demand, which makes them quieter at partial load and more economical on fuel, and the electronics condition the output into a cleaner waveform. That matters if you are running a modern furnace control board, a computer, networking gear, or anything with sensitive electronics inside it. It also matters for a fridge or a freezer with an inverter compressor.

The open frame is the compromise: you get inverter output without the weight and cost of a fully enclosed case, and in exchange it is louder than an enclosed inverter would be.

The practical rule: if the load is motors and resistive heat, conventional is fine. If the load includes electronics you care about, buy the inverter.

Decision two: gasoline-only or dual fuel

Within each pair, the dual-fuel version adds propane. It runs the same engine at the same wattage on gasoline, and somewhat lower on propane, because propane carries less energy per unit delivered to the cylinder.

What you buy with that premium is storage. Gasoline degrades — a can filled last season is one of the most common reasons a generator will not start when it is finally needed. Propane sits in a cylinder for years without going stale, swaps at any hardware store, and starts cleanly after a long idle.

If the generator will be started a few times a year and otherwise sit in a garage, dual fuel earns its premium on readiness alone. If it runs weekly on a jobsite and gets fresh fuel constantly, the gasoline-only version is the honest choice.

Matching wattage to the load

Running watts and starting watts are different numbers, and the starting surge of a motor is what sets the size you need. Add the starting wattage of the single largest motor — a well pump, a furnace blower, a fridge compressor — to the running wattage of everything else you intend to have on at once.

The 3800-watt class covers a modest essentials list: refrigeration, some lighting, a few outlets, a furnace on a small blower. The 5500-watt class adds headroom for a well pump or a larger blower, and gives you room to run more than one motor without brownouts on start-up.

If your calculation lands above the 5500-watt class, the 201586 is the one CARB-certified Champion portable that goes there. Above its 10,000 running watts you are into permanently installed home standby territory, which is a separate product category on a separate emissions program.

What none of the five will do

These are all portable generators. None of them starts itself. If you want the generator to come on automatically when the utility drops, that is a home standby unit wired through an automatic transfer switch, and it is a different purchase.

Any of these five can still feed house circuits rather than extension cords — through a manual transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician. Never through a double-male cord into a wall outlet; that backfeeds the utility line and can kill a line worker restoring your street.
