3-Point Stump Grinder Buying Guide: Match the Grinder to Your Tractor

A 3-point stump grinder turns the tractor you already own into a stump removal machine. Instead of renting a standalone grinder every time a tree comes down, you hitch the grinder to your three-point linkage, connect the PTO and grind stumps below grade on your own schedule. The decision comes down to matching the grinder to your tractor's PTO horsepower, then choosing between a 3-point PTO unit, a skid steer attachment or a self-powered towable grinder. This guide covers each option using the MechMaxx stump grinders we carry.

How a 3-Point PTO Stump Grinder Works

The grinder mounts to your tractor's three-point hitch. A PTO driveshaft transfers power from the tractor's 540 RPM PTO to a heavy flywheel fitted with carbide teeth. You lower the spinning wheel onto the stump, then sweep it side to side (some models use hydraulic cylinders for this), taking the stump down a little at a time. The MechMaxx 3-point grinders ship with a PTO shaft that includes a slip clutch, which protects the tractor driveline if the wheel hits a rock or buried root.

Match the Stump Grinder to Your Tractor's PTO Horsepower

PTO horsepower, not engine horsepower, is the number that matters. It is lower than the engine rating and is listed in your tractor's manual. Running a grinder sized for a bigger tractor will bog the PTO; running a small grinder on a big tractor wastes capacity.

Model Type Power requirement Carbide teeth Best for
MechMaxx SG24 3-point PTO 15–45 PTO HP 34 Compact and sub-compact tractors
MechMaxx SG24PRO 3-point PTO 15–45 PTO HP 34 Compact tractors, upgraded build

MechMaxx 3-point grinder, 30" flywheel 3-point PTO 40–100 HP 44 Large tractors, big hardwood stumps
MechMaxx SG61 Skid steer hydraulic 18–23 GPM 34 Skid steer owners
MechMaxx MSG20 Mini skid steer Mini skid steer hydraulics 24 (20" flywheel) Mini skid steers, tight yards

3-Point Stump Grinder vs Skid Steer vs Towable

3-point PTO grinder: the most cost-effective choice if you already own a tractor with a Category 1 three-point hitch and a 540 RPM PTO. The SG24 is quick-attach compatible.

Skid steer stump grinder: runs on the loader's auxiliary hydraulics. Check your skid steer's high-flow or standard-flow GPM rating before you buy; the SG61 needs 18–23 GPM. A skid steer lets you reach stumps along fences and slopes where backing a tractor is awkward.

Towable gas stump grinder: the SG380 carries its own 15 HP engine with electric start and a tow bar, so it works for homeowners and landscapers without a tractor.

Safety Before You Grind

Call 811 before grinding anywhere near utilities; stump grinding goes below grade and can reach buried lines. Clear rocks, wire and metal from around the stump, keep bystanders well back from the discharge area, and wear eye, ear and face protection. Keep the PTO guard and the grinder's shields in place every time.

Maintenance and Replacement Teeth

Carbide teeth wear and chip, especially in sandy or rocky soil. Rotating or replacing worn teeth restores cutting speed and reduces strain on the PTO. We stock replacement teeth and nuts that fit the SG24, SG24PRO, SG28, SG30PRO and SG61.

Stump Grinder Combos

If you are clearing land, a combo saves on shipping and setup. MechMaxx bundles pair the SG24 or SG24PRO with a PTO wood chipper, a flail mower, a portable sawmill, a forestry skidding winch or a dump trailer, so one order covers the whole job from felling to cleanup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size tractor do I need for a 3-point stump grinder?

Match the grinder to your tractor's PTO horsepower. The MechMaxx SG24 and SG24PRO are built for 15 to 45 PTO HP, and the larger 44-tooth models cover 35 to 80 HP and 40 to 100 HP.

Does a 3-point stump grinder come with a PTO shaft?

The MechMaxx 3-point grinders ship with a PTO shaft that includes a slip clutch to protect the tractor driveline.

Can I use a stump grinder on a skid steer?

Yes, with a hydraulic skid steer stump grinder. The MechMaxx SG61 needs 18 to 23 GPM of auxiliary flow, and the MSG20 is sized for mini skid steers.

What if I do not own a tractor or skid steer?

Choose a self-powered towable grinder such as the MechMaxx SG380, which has its own 15 HP 420cc engine with electric start and a tow bar.

How often do stump grinder teeth need replacing?

It depends on soil and stump type. Sandy or rocky ground wears carbide teeth faster. Rotate or replace teeth when cutting slows, and keep a spare set on hand.
