Most "best Jackery" lists rank by capacity and stop there. That is the wrong test for home backup. What matters when the power drops is whether the unit can start your refrigerator, whether it can run long enough to matter, whether you can grow it later, and whether it switches over without you being home. This guide ranks the current Jackery lineup against those four questions.

1. Can it start the load? Rated output in watts is a hard ceiling. A 640Wh station with 500W rated output cannot run a 1,500W space heater no matter how much capacity it has. Add up everything you want running simultaneously, then add headroom for motor startup surge.
2. Can it run long enough? Capacity in watt-hours divided by draw in watts gives runtime, but budget about 85% of the rated figure for inverter losses. A 3,072Wh station carries a cycling refrigerator roughly 20 hours — long enough for the vast majority of US outages.
3. Can it grow? Expansion battery packs are almost always cheaper per watt-hour than buying a bigger station later. Buying a model that accepts them is the single best hedge against under-sizing.
4. Does it switch over automatically? Without a transfer switch, backup power requires a person at home to plug things in. If you travel, or if the outage starts at 3am, that is a real gap.
The HomePower 3000 is the model we recommend most often, because 3,072Wh and 3,600W output is the point where a power station stops being a gadget and starts being infrastructure. One thing to know before you shop it: this is the same machine formerly sold as the Explorer 3000 v2. Jackery renamed it, and both names still circulate. If your outages run into days rather than hours — ice storms, hurricane country, rural service — the HomePower 3600 Plus is the better buy. 3,584Wh and 3,600W output, and critically it accepts Battery Pack 3600 expansion units so you can scale capacity without replacing the station.
It also runs at roughly 30dB — about library volume — which sounds like a minor spec until you have tried to sleep next to a gas generator. It sits indoors safely, produces no exhaust, and needs no fuel stored in a garage.

The Explorer 5000 Plus at 5,040Wh is where Jackery crosses from "backup for essentials" into genuine whole-home territory. Paired with a Smart Transfer Switch, it takes over automatically when utility power drops — nobody has to be home, nothing has to be replugged.
Two configurations are worth knowing. The 10kWh build adds a Battery Pack 5000 Plus for double the capacity, and the Solar Generator 5000 Plus configuration adds the transfer switch to the base station.
Be honest about the install, though. A transfer switch is an electrical job. Budget for a licensed electrician, and confirm which circuits you actually want backed up before you buy — most households need far fewer than they assume.
Not every household needs three kilowatt-hours. If your goal is keeping a home office online, a router live, a few lights on and phones charged, the HomePower 1000 Plus v2 does it for a fraction of the cost — and it is expandable, so it grows if your needs do.
The plain HomePower 1000 v2 is the cheaper sibling at 1,024Wh. The difference that matters is expandability, not the base capacity — which is why we usually steer people to the Plus.

Solar changes backup power from a finite battery into a renewable supply, but only if the outage lasts long enough to matter. Skip solar if your outages are measured in hours and you can recharge from the wall between them. Buy solar if outages run into days, you lose power in storms that knock out service regionally, or you also camp and want the panels used year-round.

Size the battery to the outage you actually get, not the one you imagine. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, US electricity customers averaged 11 hours without power in 2024 — nearly double the annual average of the decade before. That figure splits in a way that matters for this decision: about 2 hours came from routine interruptions, and nearly 9 hours came from major events, with Hurricanes Beryl, Helene and Milton alone accounting for 80% of total outage hours.
Read that split carefully, because it tells you which unit to buy. If you live somewhere without significant storm exposure, your realistic exposure is a couple of hours a year of routine interruption — a 1,000–2,000Wh station covers that comfortably and you are over-buying above it. If you are in hurricane, ice-storm or wildfire-shutoff territory, your exposure is not the average at all; it is a multi-day event a few times a decade. That is a 3,000Wh+ expandable system, ideally with solar, because you will not be recharging from the wall.
The national average is also rising rather than falling, which argues for buying expandable rather than buying exactly enough for today.
Do this before you shop and the model picks itself.
Step 1 — List what must stay on. Be ruthless. For most households the honest list is: refrigerator, internet router and modem, phone and laptop charging, a few LED lights, and any medical device. That is it. Freezers, well pumps and sump pumps get added where relevant.
Step 2 — Add the running watts. Refrigerator ~150W cycling average, router and modem ~15W, laptop ~60W, LED lighting ~10W per fixture, CPAP ~40W without humidifier. A typical essentials list lands between 250W and 400W.
Step 3 — Check the surge. Find your largest motor load — usually the fridge or a pump — and confirm the station's surge rating clears several times its running wattage. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that produces a station that trips instead of starting the fridge.
Step 4 — Multiply by the hours you want. Take your running total, multiply by target runtime, then divide by 0.85 for inverter losses. 300W of essentials for 12 hours is 3,600Wh ÷ 0.85 ≈ 4,200Wh — which tells you a 3,584Wh HomePower 3600 Plus gets you close to a full day, and expansion covers the rest.
Step 5 — Decide on automatic changeover. If nobody will reliably be home when the power drops, add a transfer switch and budget for an electrician.
Gas generators still win on one axis: unlimited runtime as long as you keep feeding them fuel. For a week-long grid-down event in a rural area, that is decisive.
For everything else, a battery station wins on the things that actually bite. It runs indoors safely — no carbon monoxide, which kills people every hurricane season when generators get run in garages. It starts instantly and silently at roughly 30dB instead of 70dB+. It needs no fuel stored, stabilised or rotated, and no oil changes or carburettor maintenance. And it delivers clean power that will not damage sensitive electronics.

Every model above uses LiFePO4 rather than the NMC chemistry common in older power stations. Rated cycle life is 6,000+ charges to 70% of original capacity against roughly 500–1,000 for NMC. For a unit cycled weekly, that is over a decade of service instead of a few years.
For backup specifically, the storage behaviour matters as much as the cycle count. Current Jackery models lose under 5% of their charge over six months sitting idle, so the unit is actually charged when you need it. That is the failure mode most people never think about until the outage arrives and the battery is flat.
Sizing to capacity instead of output. A big battery with a small inverter still cannot start a well pump. Check both numbers.
Forgetting the surge. Refrigerators and pumps draw several times their running wattage for a moment at startup. Surge rating is quoted separately for a reason.
Buying a discontinued model because it looks cheap. Explorer 2000 Plus, Solar Generator 2000 Pro and Solar Generator 3000 Pro are all out of production. Expansion batteries and support get harder to source once a line ends.
Assuming you need whole-home. Most households want a fridge, a freezer, a few circuits of lighting, internet and device charging. That is a 2,000–3,600Wh problem, not a 10kWh one.
