Portable Power Stations
A portable power station is a lithium battery, an inverter, and a charge controller in one carryable box. No engine, no fuel, no fumes, no noise — which is why it is the only backup power you can safely run inside a house, a tent, or a van.

Watt-hours vs. watts
Watt-hours (Wh) is capacity — the size of the tank. Watts (W) is continuous output — how fast you can draw from it. A 1,000Wh station rated 1,800W will run an 1,800W space heater for roughly half an hour, or a 60W laptop for the better part of a day. Check both numbers against your actual loads: high-draw appliances (kettles, microwaves, hair dryers, well pumps) fail on the output rating, not the capacity rating.
LiFePO4 is worth the premium
Lithium iron phosphate (LFP/LiFePO4) cells hold roughly 3,000–4,000 cycles to 80% capacity, against 500–800 for older NMC lithium. On a unit you cycle weekly, that is the difference between a decade of service and about two years. Nearly everything current from EcoFlow, Jackery, and Anker SOLIX is LFP — confirm on any older or bargain-priced model.
Features that change how you use it
- UPS passthrough (EcoFlow DELTA 3 series switches in ~10ms) — keeps a desktop, router, or CPAP alive through the cutover. If the unit is going to sit between the wall and something that must not blink, this is the spec that matters.
- Expandable capacity — add battery modules later instead of replacing the unit.
- Solar input ceiling — determines how fast you can recharge off-grid. Plan for 60–75% of rated input in real-world sun.
- 240V output or split-phase — required for well pumps, dryers, and most home-panel integration.
